Obese Children In Cities Are At A Greater Risk Of Health Complications

According to a report in the Times of India published in June 2013, Vitamin D Deficiency leads to obesity as well as increased risk of other health complication in children. Experts believe 15% of urban children are obese in Maharashtra; and it is predicted to double in the next 5 years. On other hand, another report published around the same time in the Echo of India, Karnataka Edition claims that 15% of urban children are obese in West Bengal, while it is predicted to double in the next 5 years. Vitamin D is stored in the fat storage in our body. In obese children, an increased amount of fat leads to more than necessary absorption of the Vitamin D which is later prevented from being fully utilized in the blood.

In case of urban children, mostly playing indoors, playing video games or watching TV or surfing the Internet prevents them from being physically active and being out under the sun. Vitamin D dissolves in the fat in the body; however, excess of body fat snatches Vitamin D away from circulation leading to vitamin D deficiency.

Vitamin D deficiency as the reports state not only leads to obesity but also leads to other health complication in kids, according to experts. Research indicates that nearly 75% of human body’s supply of Vitamin D is generated by our skin’s exposure to the UV-B rays in the sunlight.

In addition, vitamin D also plays a major role in the metabolism function whose deficiency leads to weak metabolism leading to obesity. A 10% increase in your BMI (Body Mass Index) lowers vitamin D in the body by 4.2%. This not only makes it essential for obese children but also adults to expose themselves to sunlight regularly to raise their vitamin D level. Staying in the sun between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. for 15 minutes daily is usually sufficient to maintaining an optimum dose of vitamin D in the body.

According to Dr. Apurba Ghosh of the Indian Academy of Paediatrics IAP suggests that maintaining required levels of vitamin D is critical as it influences nearly 3,000 of the roughly 25,000 genes in the human body. An adequate level of vitamin D in the body not only assists in reducing bad cholesterol and raising the level of good cholesterol but also aids in a multitude of essential maintenance and repair activities of the body. According to him, the functioning of Vitamin D is one of the most important realizations of the past decade.

Vitamin D is primarily crucial to bone and muscle health but has also found to be linked to various other physiological and hormonal processes in the body. Essentially obtained from sunlight, in people with a higher deficiency, it can be obtained through a proper diet and additional supplementation.
